Liquid Facelift

The term non-surgical facelifts has been used to describe many different procedures that give the appearance of a facelift, but without the surgery. One type of non-surgical facelift is called the liquid facelift. Using products that are called fillers that are placed in the deeper layers of the skin, a person’s face will actually have a lifting effect.  The fillers that are used for producing this effect include Sculptra, Juvederm, Perlane, Restylane, Artefill, Silikon, and other fillers.

As we age we lose volume in both the dermis and fat layers of our skin of the face. With this loss of volume our skin becomes looser and we develop wrinkles, folds, and jowling. To reduce this effect of aging, fillers can be ejected into the dermis of the skin which restores the volume and creates a lifting effect of the skin. The effect is somewhat similar to a partially deflated balloon that will appear wrinkly and lax.

A simple puff of air into the partially deflated balloon will restore its volume causing the balloon to lose its wrinkles and the balloon to have a taut and firm appearance.
The term liquid facelift has been used to describe not only the filling of the lower face to re-volumize and  lift the skin, but also refers to the injection of Botox into the brow, forehead, and crow’s feet which relaxes these muscles and diminishes wrinkles in this area. The Botox if injected in certain areas can create a lifting effect of the eyebrows and also the mid brow region. Therefore, using both fillers in the lower face and Botox in the upper face one can create tightening, volumizing, and lifting of the face without surgery. This technique is best used on patients who have only mild or moderate looseness of the skin on their face. Patients which have more severe loosening of the skin are best with a traditional surgical facelift.

To really understand how the liquid facelift works one should be aware that by injecting Botox in the brow area this relaxes the muscles that normally pull down because these muscles are relaxed a lifting effect occurs in the mid-brow area. Besides having a lifting effect in this area it also makes the patient appear more friendly, approachable and less angry. It also reduces or eliminates the lines between the eyebrows and along the base of the nose. The second area where Botox can create a lifting effect is the lateral eyebrows to create an arched eyebrow effect. To summarize that Botox is used to create a lifting effect in the mid-brow and lateral eyebrow area. The fillers are used to create a lifting effect of the lower face usually the fillers are injected in the tear trough and along the cheek bone.

These are both areas of the face that lose volume as we age restoring the lost volume in the tear trough area and along the cheek gives a more youthful appearance. Also by restoring the volume this creates a lifting effect pulling of the skin in the lower face reducing the lines around the mouth called the nasolabial folds and labiomental fold and also reducing jowling. In addition to the technique describes some filler may be injected nasolabial fold, labiomental fold, or even the lower cheek if the volume lose there is significant. Again this restores volume tightens and lifts the skin. The choice of which filler to put in which location of the face to create a liquid facelift needs to be discussed thoroughly with your physician. There are many different types of fillers and only a thorough consultation with your physician will allow you to both understand and choose the correct filler for the effect you desire.
